What
is a CSA?
A large portion of our farm expenses
occur during the months of January, February and March. We need to buy seeds
and bare-root berry bushes, farm equipment, irrigation supplies, mulch and soil
amendments long before anything starts producing. One way small farmers deal
with this reality is through the concept of Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA). By purchasing a CSA share early in the year, customers offer their
financial support at the time it is most needed.
A typical CSA requires the payment
of a set membership fee. Most local CSA shares for a 20 week season sell for about $650 for a full share (4 people) to $350 for a small share (1 person). Though we think CSA’s are a great idea, typical ones
have some drawbacks –they’re a fixed price, you don’t get to choose what and
how much you get in your share and you have to be around each week or make
arrangements for pick-up.
A Different Kind of CSA
We offer a different kind of CSA – a “CSA Credit
Share.” With our plan our members decide how much they want to put
into a Hoot ‘n’ Howl CSA Credit Share for the season and
then are able to choose when, what and how much to buy from the offerings we
have on our stand and in our fields. The minimum membership is $100.

Use it or Donate it
If by December 31, 2012 you have
any remaining “Hoot ‘n’ Howl
Bucks”, you can turn them in to us and we will issue you a tax-deductible
donation receipt for equivalent produce that we have donated to Emergency
Family Assistance Association here in Boulder.
Of course, if this idea doesn’t fit with your plans we will continue to operate
our farm stand on a cash basis and will be delighted to welcome your business and
your visits.
